Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Islanders Sweep First Matches, Second Match Completions Delayed to Thursday

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After fighting the rain all day, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs finally hit the courts to complete one of two scheduled matches in their 2024 home openers.

The teams played at the Texas A&M-Kingsville tennis courts as a way of escaping the weather, though, it still proved to be a home advantage as the Islanders swept the Prairie View A&M men and women 4-0 in the first matches of the original doubleheader. Soon after the start of the second matches, rain struck again and sent the teams into a delay.

The remainder of the second matches will be completed tomorrow beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the H-E-B Tennis Center.

"I think both teams showed a lot of grit and resilience today! We showed up at 9 a.m. and didn't play until 3:30 p.m. but the focus and energy was very strong and I'm very proud of the heart our players showed! We're getting better every day with our process and fitness, and our team unity is our strength! This is an incredibly motivated group and they showed it today," said head coach Steve Moore.

After about five hours of delay, seniors Emma Aucagne and Naomi Moi McKenzie got the first match started with a 6-3 win at the ones to secure the double point. Aucagne followed it up with a 6-3,6-1 win at No. 1 singles.

Senior Valeria Cherfus notched a 6-3,6-3 win at No. 3 to clinch the match after freshman Ana Veroux got the quick 6-2,6-0 singles win at the four spot.

The men began with Iannis Fernandes/Nicholas Trebuchet and Matthieu Coignat/Antoine Vicaire winning at the two and three doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Fernandes and Coignat then each won their singles matches in clean 6-0 sweeps. Trebuchet helped clinch the win with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles.

Both teams improve to 3-0 on the season ahead of the second matches tomorrow. The women are now 40-0 all-time over Prairie View while the men move to 43-0 against the Panthers.
