HOUSTON – A goal by freshman
Taylor Thibodeau in the 80th minute fueled a 1-0 shutout victory for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program over HCU on Friday evening at Sorrels Field.
The score came off a corner kick as a loose ball in the box was fired into the back of the net by Thibodeau. It was her second goal of the season and moved A&M-Corpus Christi's conference record to 1-1-1.
"I'm so unbelievably proud of this team. Other teams would have given up with the adversity we've had. They deserve this so much," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
It was A&M-Corpus Christi's first-ever road win at HCU in program history. The victory also extended the team's road unbeaten streak to five games. It was the eighth road game of the season for the Islanders.
A big performance in net came from junior
Zoe Theriot. She improved her record to 2-0 after making six saves including a pair of game-savers.
Both teams recorded six shots on goal. Thibodeau tallied a pair and junior
Megan Guy, junior
Storm Harris, sophomore
Mai-Lisa Atis and freshman
Aaliyah Ramadan all registered one. The teams were also even in corner kicks with six apiece.
Theriot was one of three Islanders to play all 90 minutes including junior
Emma Crump in defense and freshman
Vanessa Wimbish at midfield.
The Islanders will look to further extend their road unbeaten streak Sunday when they close out the weekend with a 1 p.m. game at UIW. A&M-Corpus Christi's next home game is Friday, Oct. 6 when it hosts Southeastern at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
