SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program got on the board first and led 1-0 at half before UIW came back to snatch a 3-1 decision Sunday at Benson Stadium.
The Islanders scored in the 36th minute off a corner kick in similar fashion to their game-winner against HCU on Friday. A loose ball in the box was fired in by graduate
Olivia Hughes for her second goal of the season. It came after freshman
Taylor Thibodeau's score to beat the Huskies 1-0.
Though, the Cardinals answered with three goals in the second half to finish on top.
"The ladies gave everything they had and I'm proud of them for that," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "Playing a team that has Friday off at this level is ridiculously hard."
The final stats indicated a very even game as UIW held a slight 8-7 edge in shots but the Islanders where ahead 7-6 in shots on goal. Both teams recorded four corner kicks.
Junior
Emma Crump played all 90 minutes to anchor the back line. Freshman
Vanessa Wimbish logged 81 minutes in the midfield.
It was UIW's first win in a couple years against A&M-Corpus Christi after the Islanders swept the season series 2-0 at home and 4-1 on the road last year.
Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi returns home Friday when it hosts Southeastern at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
