CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Junior
Matthew Watson from the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball program was a vital part of the Orleans Firebirds playoff push in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
As a member of the Firebirds, the right-hander pitched 7.0 innings over five games allowing only three hits and one run to finish the regular season with a 1.28 ERA. In the playoffs, Watson collected a win in 6.0 innings over 3 games. He posted a 1.50 ERA while only allowing three hits, a walk and striking out four in his three appearances.
"
Matthew Watson (RHP, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 2023) is a strapping 6-foot-5, 220-pound righty with a short arm action to a high slot, producing 88-91 mph velocity with a good slider at 82-84 with short, late bite, a decent mid-70s curveball, and a solid 84-85 mph changeup... could be primed for a breakout year as a fourth-year junior next spring," said Aaron Fitt of D1 Baseball.
Watson made 14 starts and 17 appearances for the Islanders last year. He threw the second-most innings pitched on the team with 78.1 and struck out 54 batters. He finished the year with a 6-5 record, which included four consecutive wins in conference play.
