SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Finishing out the last round of the 2023-24 season opener, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf team finished 11
th out of 17 schools with an 898 (+34) final score card in the Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet at Rivercut Golf Course.
The Islanders carded a 311 in round three to finished with an 898, one stroke better than how the team finished last year at Missouri State. It came after A&M-Corpus Christi tied its third lowest round in school history with a 285 score in round two yesterday.
"It wasn't the final round we were hoping for as a team," said head coach
Pat Stephens. "However, there are lots of positives taken from our first tournament of the fall season."
Senior
Lucie Charbonnier paced the Islanders and ended under par through three rounds, totaling a 214 (-2) for a fourth-place individual finish. Her 54-hole total was one stroke behind her career best, set three times last season.
Sophomore
Lucia Ramirez registered a 78 final round to record a 223 for the tournament, which was good for a 23
rd-place tie. Freshman
Samantha Gibbs completed her collegiate debut with a 77-69-84 – 229, finishing in the top half at 42
nd.
Rounding out the lineup was sophomore
Elsa Tornvall with a 236 and senior
Reese Drezins with a 245.
A&M-Corpus Christi was fourth overall in birdies with 37 in the tournament. Charbonnier and Ramirez led the team with 10 each.
"Lucie continues to show why she is one of the premier players in the Southland Conference and rewriting the program record book. She had a wonderful tournament, finishing tied for fourth. Our second round score showed what the team is definitely capable of, and I liked what I saw from the entire team. We know what we need to work and I feel they will be prepared for our next tournament at Sam Houston State," said Stephens.
The Islanders will be back in action on Sept. 25-26 at Sam Houston State. They will look to top their last year's performance in Huntsville where they placed fourth out of 13 schools.
