Big Second Round Advances Islanders to Sixth Place at Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – After tying the school record for third lowest round, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi improved from 12th to sixth place following a 285 round two on day one of the Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet at Rivercut Golf Course.

The Islanders started the day with a 302 round one where they were projected in 12th place out of 17 teams. However, the team improved by 17 strokes for a 285 round two which tied the third lowest team round in school history and helped them finish in sixth place after day one. They are now just 10 strokes out of first-place (Austin Peay, 577).

The 285 was first set last season at the Texas State Invitational under head coach Pat Stephens.

"After a very slow start, the team got their games going," said Stephens. "There is always some apprehension about the first tournament of the fall season but we moved from 12th place to sixth after an outstanding second round. Lucie, Lucia, and Samantha all shot 69 (-3) for three players to shoot in the 60's in the same round."

Senior Lucie Charbonnier was under par in both rounds, turning in a 71 through the first 18 before improving to a 69 in round two for a 140 (-4) total on the day. She remains tied for third out of 96 athletes.

Sophomore Lucia Ramirez matched Charbonnier in round two to submit her career low round of a 69. She sits tied for 13th with a 145 36-hole total. Freshman Samantha Gibbs made her collegiate debut and also shot a career-low 69 in round two for a 146 total on the day.

Sophomore Elsa Tornvall turned in a pair of 78 rounds while senior Reese Drezins improved by 10 strokes from her first round to also record a 78 in round two.

It is the first time in program history that multiple student-athletes tallied scores in the 60s in the same round of the same tournament.

"We will be looking for another strong round and moving up a few more spots on the leader board," Stephens said.

A&M-Corpus Christi's 587 36-hole total is 21 strokes better than its last year's day one of the Missouri State Payne Stewart Meet. The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
