A&M-Corpus Christi Excels at Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Beginning the season on a high note, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs won four flights at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open over the weekend at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

Flight winners included senior Emma Aucagne in Flight A singles, seniors Kateryna Rublevska and Valeria Cherfus in Flight B doubles, and an unplayed all-Islanders Flight C singles finals between Cherfus and freshman Ana Veroux.

A&M-Corpus Christi competed in flights against Utah State, Texas State, Abilene Christian, Lamar, UTRGV and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Aucagne won the top flight in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 over Kiana Graham from Texas State. In Flight B doubles, it was an all-Islanders final as Rublevska and Cherfus edged out senior Victoire Delattre and Palina Saulevich 7-6 (3) in a highly contested battle.

In men's doubles, the team of senior Avery Zavala and sophomore Marty Etienne earned third-place after picking up a pair of wins. It included a 6-1 victory over a Nicholls pair in the first round. Zavala also notched a straight-set singles win 6-1, 6-3 over UTRGV's Borna Devald.

In Flight C men's singles, freshman Nicolas Trebuchet and sophomore Lucas Schurdevin each tallied an opening right victory. Trebuchet ousted Dennis Dutine from Abilene Christian 6-2, 6-4, while Schurdevin topped Agustin Salazar from UTRGV 6-1, 6-3.

"The Islander Open has been a great college tournament for 20 years, but the first-ever Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open was truly special. Jake Frederick was such a great Islander, friend, father and husband and gave his life protecting our freedom. Having his brother, Joe Bob, speak to the team today is something none of us will forget. Our players showed great character and grew tremendously this weekend. We talk about the fork in the road when we feel pressure between process and panic, and we are making great choices to stick with our process. I love the character, motivation and team unity of these Islanders. They competed extremely hard this weekend. We had some really good teams here and this was a great event once again for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and the Corpus Christi community," said head coach Steve Moore.

Jake Frederick was an Islanders Tennis player who joined the team in 2002 and later became an F-18 Marine pilot. Jake was beloved in the Corpus Christi community as he and his brother, Joel, played tennis for the Islanders and went on to become Marine pilots! Sadly, in 2016, Jake gave his life for his country during a flight over the Pacific Ocean.
