EDINBURG, Texas – The first installment of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union just didn't end in favor of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program as UTRGV garnered a late goal to take a 2-1 decision Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Islanders (1-1) had twice as many shots as the Vaqueros (1-1) with an 8-4 advantage. A&M-Corpus Christi also notched a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
Though, UTRGV broke a tied game in the 81st minute after a deflected bouncing ball landed at the feet of a forward for a score in the lower right corner.
"Pretty disappointed to be honest but we will learn from it. They outfought us and started way better, and you can't do that at this level," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
A&M-Corpus Christi registered a goal in the final minute of the first half. It came on a set pieces opportunity as senior
Olivia Hughes fired a bullet into the top right corner on a free kick for her first goal of the year. It evened the game 1-1 at the intermission.
Seven different Islanders recorded a shot in the game. Freshman
Aaliyah Ramadan led the squad with a pair, while junior
Rachel Loetzer, junior
Gracie Gill, junior
Megan Guy, junior
Faith Adams, sophomore
Mai-Lisa Atis and Hughes each had one.
Senior

Sunday was the first of a six-match road swing for the Islanders. Their next home game is Thursday, Sept. 14 when they host UTRGV in a rematch at 7 p.m.
