CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A big second half resulted in a 2-0 win for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program over Texas Southern in the season and home opener of the 2023 on Thursday evening at Dugan Stadium.
The score was deadlocked 0-0 until the 62nd minute when junior
Megan Guy scored the go-ahead goal. The play started off a deep punt by goalkeeper
Kennedy Stelling. It was chased down and deflected off a defender by junior
Storm Harris to the feet of Guy about six yards out and she finished into the lower right corner.
It was the fifth career goal by Guy and first career assist by Harris.
The Islanders tacked on another in the 72nd minute. After a drive down the left side, Guy crossed a ball right in front of the net to sophomore
Mai-Lisa Atis who was left alone and scored on a left-footed touch. It was the fourth career goal by Atis.
"I loved our intensity in the second half. We came out a little flat, a little nervous with it being our first regular season game and at home with a good crowd. But in the second half we came out, fixed a few things and brought up the speed of play and that's what opened up chances for us," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "It's great to get a win and it's great to get out with no injuries against a very physical team."
The Islanders outshot the Tigers 24-6 including a 16-2 edge in shots on goal. Junior
Morgan Westbury tallied a team-high five shots with three on goal and was one of 11 Islanders with a shot in the game.
Stelling registered a clean sheet in net and made a pair of saves in 90 minutes. She was aided by senior
Emma Herrera who logged 90 minutes at the center back position.
A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 6-0-0 all-time against Texas Southern with a combined score of 22-2. The Tigers were coming off a 2-2 tie against UTRGV last weekend in an exhibition match.
The Islanders will begin a six-match road swing Sunday when they travel to UTRGV for a 6:30 p.m. bout in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
