CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - In its second consecutive win, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (22-24) clinched the series over Northwestern State (24-20) in a 4-1 victory Saturday night at Chapman Field.
"I am super proud of our guys. We have been playing very good baseball but we had yet to win a series on a Saturday," said head coach
Scott Malone. "That was the challenge put in front of the team to fo our and clouse our a series win in two days against a really good team."
Junior
Colin Purcell and sophomore
Zach Garcia combined to throw seven shutout innings before the Demons broke up the bid in the eighth. Each pitcher only allowed three hits with the former going six innings and the latter closing out the game. Purcell earned his fourth win of the season and Garcia with his first season save.
"Purcell was the story with great starting pitching, handing zeros and giving his teammates a chance to score," praised Malone. "We did the little things great early in the game and put down some bunts to put the ball in play against a really good strikeout pitcher."
Getting its offense kicked off, A&M-Corpus Christi scored two runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back plays, seeing sophomore
Chance Reisdorph and junior
Sebastian Trinidad cross home plate.
The team tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh with with Trinidad and classmate
Diego Johnson scoring the final two runs for the blue and green. Northwestern State plated one in the top of the eighth to break up the shutout bid.
Johnson collected a third of the Islanders' hits with two in the performance to lead the way for the team. He was joined in the hit column by four other players. Trinidad earned two of the team's runs with senior
Max Puls claiming two RBIs.
Both teams meet for the third and final game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with live stats to follow the action.
