A&M-Corpus Christi Readies for NCAA Tournament Matches against Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Making its 16th appearance at the NCAA Tournament, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's & women's tennis programs will square off with Texas on Friday and Saturday at the Texas Tennis Center.
 
At 2 p.m. Friday, the women (25-2, 7-0 SLC) will look to knock off the back-to-back defending national champion Longhorns, who enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed. The Islanders will enter play on a 14-match winning-streak and will carry-over a 34-match home winning-streak into next season.
 
At 1 p.m. Saturday, the men (20-7, 3-2 SLC) will go up against the No. 1 seed Texas. The Islanders have won eight in a row including a 4-3 thriller over New Orleans in the finals of the Southland Conference Championship.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi tennis will be making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons. The programs have combined for 33 conference championships.
 
"We are incredibly excited to be competing in the NCAA Championships again. This is tremendous pride for A&M-Corpus Christi to be 1 of 29 universities in America with men's and women's tennis at the 2023 NCAA Championships. I know how special that is for our beloved university and the city," said head coach Steve Moore. "Since September, these Islanders have trained with so much heart, motivation and discipline to earn this. And the team unity and family are so special with these Islanders. We know every match at the NCAA's is a tremendous challenge and we are ready to do what we always do – play each present point with intensity, control what we can control and cheer for each other with all our hearts!"
 
The Islanders, who have not lost a match in over a month, earned nine All-Conference selections and a pair of SLC Tournament MVPs.
 
Junior Valeria Cherfus was named the women's MVP after going 5-0 combined in singles and doubles in the tournament. With a 17-2 (7-0 SLC) record, she's won 10 consecutive singles matches and nine straight doubles matches.
 
Also on long winning-streaks is senior Victoire Delattre. She's won 11 straight singles and seven consecutive doubles matches. Delattre hoists a 19-2 (7-0 SLC) singles record.
 
For the men, senior Pascal Lorieul was named the Tournament MVP after clinching the championship match against New Orleans. Lorieul is 15-8 in singles and 18-5 in doubles and was named to the All-Conference First-Team in doubles with junior Avery Zavala.
 
Fellow senior Nathan Schwartz has won seven straight matches and is 18-5 on the year. Senior Matthieu Peres won all three of his singles matches in the SLC Tournament, has won six in a row and is 18-4 on the season.
 
The winner of the women's match will play Saturday against the winner of California and San Diego. The winner of the men's match will play Sunday against the winner of UTSA and Pepperdine.
