Islanders Fall to Baylor in Twilight Matchup

WACO, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball program (20-24) fell to Baylor (16-30) 12-6 Wednesday night at Baylor Ballpark as a late comeback in the top of the ninth fell short.

"This isn't the night we wanted, but we have to hit that reset button and see what we can do to help the team win this weekend," said head coach Scott Malone.

The Islanders took an early lead in the duel in the first inning as junior Diego Johnson scored on back-to-back doubles, the RBI going to senior Brendan Ryan. The Bears tied in in the bottom half and scored five more runs scattered over three innings.

A&M-Corpus Christi attacked once more in the top of the fifth as Tyler Linneweber, a senior, earned his second run of the season. Johnson rounded the bases again for the blue and green shortly after to make it a 7-3 game. Baylor tacked on five runs in the bottom of the sixth after being shut out in the fifth.

A&M-Corpus Christi fought back in the top of the ninth with an RBI single by sophomore Chance Reisdorph to bring home Ryan for the fourth run of the game. In the ensuing at-bat, the blue and green plated two more runs on an errant throw to make it a 12-6 ballgame.

Sophomore Zach Garcia took the mound to start the game and went on to throw two complete innings, striking out two before being relieved at the top of the third by Austin Dean, a junior. Freshman Nash Villegas made his seventh appearance of the season for an inning before junior Dalton LeBlanc pitched an inning after.

Kyle Dickey, a classmate to Garcia, pitched two outs of the sixth inning, tag-teaming with junior Samuel Feltz to close it out. Freshman James Trimble entered the game in the bottom of the seventh for an inning as classmate Kody Gibbs appeared to kick off the eighth and close out the game. Trimble and Gibbs combined for a two-inning shutout.

The Islanders earned nine hits on the night, led by Johnson with three on the night and junior Leo Markotic who collected two hits. Four other teammates combined for the same number of hits with a single hit on the day.

A&M-Corpus Christi returns home to Chapman Field, hosting Northwestern State for a three-game series over the weekend starting on Friday.
