CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Senior captain
Pascal Lorieul from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was voted the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year to headline the SLC All-Academic Teams, released Thursday.
Â
Lorieul, the SLC Tournament MVP, was one of seven Islanders to earn All-Academic honors. For the men, he was joined by senior
Nathan Schwartz on the First-Team, while fellow seniors
Ulysse Bertrand and
Matthieu Peres earned Second-Team nods. Lorieul and Schwartz became three-time All-Academic honorees.
Â
The women landed a trio of student-athletes on the First-Team including senior
Victoire Delattre and juniors
Emma Aucagne and
Kateryna Rublevska. All three were named to the All-Academic First-Team for the second year in a row.
Â
"We are incredibly proud of these Islanders! These special high character young men and women made this a magical season for the Islanders because of the choices they made. But that same motivation, drive and discipline was equally excellent in the classroom! I've watched these student-athletes studying in vans, hotel lobbies, the training room and always juggling the extra task of being a student and an athlete," said head coach
Steve Moore.
Â
Lorieul clinched the conference tournament to send the Islanders to the NCAA Tournament in a 4-3 victory over New Orleans in the finals. He was named to the All-Conference First-Team doubles after going 18-6 overall and 4-1 in conference, and won all three doubles matches in the conference tournament. Lorieul posted non-conference singles wins over Southern Miss, UL-Lafayette, BYU, UT Arlington and UTRGV.
Â
All four men helped A&M-Corpus Christi win its 22nd conference championship and clinch the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Lorieul graduated with a 3.94 GPA in biomedical science, Schwartz a 3.91 GPA in management, Bertrand a 3.52 in environmental science and Peres a 3.64 in finance.
Â
The women won both the SLC regular season and tournament titles to advance to the NCAA Tournament. They joined the men in the Texas Regional, making A&M-Corpus Christi one of 29 universities in the country with both men's and women's tennis at the 2023 Division I NCAA Championships.
Â
Delattre graduated with a 3.29 GPA in chemistry, while Aucagne has a cumulative 3.96 GPA in criminal justice and Rublevska a perfect 4.0 GPA in management. Women's tennis had the highest GPA on campus this past semester with a 3.97.
Â
"There's so much extra work and sacrifice they put in behind the scenes people don't see but I'll tell you this – it develops them into superstar leaders for their future jobs, families, communities! They learn to rise up and find a way and not make excuses! And that's what they did in the classroom as well as the court this year! We're just so proud of the character and heart of these Islanders," Moore said.
Â
Women's tennis will carry-over a 34-match home winning-streak into next season, one of the longest in the nation.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi made its 16th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and the fifth in the last three seasons. The Islanders have won 33 conference championships overall including 22 on the men's side and 11 on the women's.
