COMMERCE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team swept the doubleheader 9-0 and 4-1 over Texas A&M-Commerce to secure its first series win in conference play this year Friday at John Cain Family Softball Complex.
The Islanders (17-15, 5-6 SLC) played long ball and knocked four home runs on the day to help fuel the doubleheader sweep over the Lions (5-29, 1-10 SLC), highlighted by the grand slam by senior
Quinn De Avila in game one.
Also going yard was junior
Taniece Tyson, junior
Sydney Hoyt and sophomore
Rhea-Ann Avalos, her first career home run as an Islander. De Avila, Tyson, and Hoyt each registered multiple hits on the day, as well as senior
Gabriella Torres and junior
Alina Jasso.
The two home runs in each game are the most against a Southland opponent this year for the Islanders and second-most overall after they hit three against UTSA on Feb. 18.
Junior
Primrose Aholelei and sophomore
Siarah Galvan got the nod as starting pitchers on the day as both threw the complete games. Aholelei shut the Lions (5-29, 1-10 SLC) out in game one, only allowing three hits while striking out seven. Galvan struck out four in her outing and only allowed the one run.
Game one marked A&M-Corpus Christi's fourth shutout and third run-rule victory of the season. It was also the second game in a row that the Islanders scored nine runs.
Tyson's home run started the scoring for the day, as she hit the solo shot in the second. Getting her second RBI of the game, she drew the bases-loaded walk in the third to score Hoyt Jasso drove Torres home in the next at-bat.
Up 3-0, the Islanders loaded the bases again in the fourth. With two outs, De Avila sent it over the left field fence for the grand slam and 7-0 lead. The scoring didn't end there, as three more Islanders got on base before sophomore
Paolina Baez earned the walk to score Jasso. Junior
Sidney Campion scored on the next play as the 9-0 advantage was held onto for the run-rule shutout.
In game two, junior
Juliana J. Garcia reached base ahead of Hoyt homering to left center for the early 2-0 lead in the first. Jasso then doubled down the left field line in the fourth and sent De Avila home from first after the throwing error by A&M-Commerce.
A&M-Corpus Christi's final run was courtesy of the solo shot by Avalos in the sixth, who entered the game as a pinch hitter. The home run came on an 0-2 count with two outs on the board.
The Lions got their first run of the day in the bottom frame of the sixth but Galvan and the defense secure the final three outs in the seventh to close out the undefeated day.
The Islanders will go for the series sweep in game three, slated for 12 p.m. on Saturday. The game can be watched live on ESPN+.
