COMMERCE, Texas – After securing its first conference series win of the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team completed the series sweep after shutting out Texas A&M-Commerce for the second time this weekend on Saturday at the John Cain Family Softball Complex.
The Islanders (18-15, 6-6 SLC) had junior
Primrose Aholelei back in the circle as she threw both complete game shutouts of the series, keeping the Lions (5-30, 1-11 SLC) scoreless through 14 combined innings. She has thrown all five of A&M-Corpus Christi's shutout victories this year.
In her 13
th win of the season, Aholelei struck out eight batters and now totals 115 to rank second in the SLC. Though, she leads the conference in batters struck out looking at 31.
Although the Islanders scored their lowest amount on the weekend in game three, they registered nine hits on the day. Junior
Sydney Hoyt, junior
Juliana J. Garcia, and senior
Gabriella Torres all notched two hits on the day. Hoyt ended the weekend with a team-high five hits through the series and is on a four-game hitting streak.
The lead-off hitter notched a single in each of the first three innings, including Garcia twice. Though, the Islanders wouldn't score until the fourth.
Torres and junior
Kimane Rogron got consecutive hits to get into scoring position. Then, sophomore
Paolina Baez drove Torres home on the fielder's choice to give the Islanders the 1-0 lead.
Aholelei then retired the next six straight. Leading off in the sixth, Hoyt doubled to left center before being pinch ran for by sophomore
Riley Todd. Freshman
Crystal Davila, as a pinch hitter, then notched the infield single to advance Todd to third.
With two runners on and no outs, the Lions made the call to the bullpen. Though, Torres reached base for the third time on the day to send Todd home who beat the throw for the 2-0 advantage.
A&M-Commerce tried to answer in the bottom frame and even got two runners into scoring position but Aholelei left them stranded as she got the batter swinging for the third out.
The Lions got another on base in the bottom of the seventh before the defense buckled down and secured the final outs of the game for the 2-0 shutout.
Improving to 18-15 on the year, A&M-Corpus Christi has not possessed a losing record for more than a day this year. The Islanders also erased a losing conference record and now holds a .500 pct in SLC play.
The Islanders will look to get to a winning conference record next weekend when they host Lamar for a three-game series at Chapman Field Friday and Saturday. All games will be available to watch live on ESPN+.
