Women’s Tennis Remains Unbeaten in Conference with Seventh Straight Win

SAN ANTONIO – One win away from a conference championship, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program went on the road and beat UIW 5-2 Wednesday at the Mabry Tennis Center.

A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 18-2 overall and 5-0 in conference. The Islanders can clinch the Southland Conference regular season title by winning one of their last two matches against McNeese and Lamar.

The Islanders jumped on the Cardinals early by winning the doubles point. They then won four singles matches in straight sets to wrap it up.

"I'm very proud of the way our team fought today! Incarnate Word is a tough, well-coached team and it was Senior Day so we had to choose the road of mental toughness and really, really fight," said head coach Steve Moore. "These girls are on a mission and fight so hard for each other! We just have to keep being present point warriors and every one has to show up to fight every point from the beginning!"

In doubles, A&M-Corpus Christi won a pair of matches 6-2. The wins came from senior Victoire Delattre and junior Emma Aucagne on court two, and juniors Valeria Cherfus and Kateryna Rublevska on court three.

The Islanders won the first set on four singles courts, which turned into straight-set wins on all four. Junior Naomi Moi McKenzie notched a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court two and Rublevska capped an unbeaten day with a 7-5, 6-0 result on court six.

Improving to 5-0 SLC in singles this year was both Cherfus and Delattre. Cherfus cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Delattre breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

As a team, the Islanders are now 82-18 (.820) in singles this season.

The women improved to 108-37 against conference opponents under Moore since 2009 including 10-0 against UIW.

Next up, the men's team will host UIW on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The women will travel to McNeese in a rescheduled match for Wednesday, April 12 at 11 a.m. with the opportunity to clinch the regular season championship.
