EDINBURG, Texas - After spending a weekend on the road, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball program continues its road trip against UTRGV Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
"This game always brings big rivalry energy on the park when we play these guys," said head coach
Scott Malone. "UTRGV has won six of their last eight and is a super talented team that is on a roll right now."
Earlier in the season when the two teams met for the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Credit Union, A&M-Corpus Christi earned a 5-4 victory over the Vaqueros, the first win on the road for the Islanders in the series since 2018.
The Islanders own two midweek victories on the 2023 campaign, one coming against UTRGV and the other at home against UTSA this past week, coming out on top 8-2.
Brendan Ryan and Tres Jones, a senior and junior respectively, lead the Southland in triples with seven and five each to sit second and third in the nation. Ryan is coming off a weekend in which he smashed two home runs, one on Friday and the other Sunday afternoon against Abilene Christian. He has also collected 47 hits in the 2023 campaign for 13th in the nation and first in the conference, the sixth conference-leading statistic he has earned.
A&M-Corpus Christi holds a conference-best .310 batting average with seven batters above .300 in the category. The collective unit has amassed 309 hits through 29 games this season, sitting 32 behind the nation leader Texas Tech.
Earning his first collegiate start, right-handed
Nash Villegas will appear on the mound first for A&M-Corpus Christi. He's thrown 7.2 innings for the team in five appearances, striking out 11 batters to only five walks.
As the two teams meet, it is the Islanders' fourth consecutive road game in a seven-game stand away from home. The next home game will be the following Tuesday against the Vaqueros.
The game is available to be streamed on ESPN+ with a subscription with live stats to follow along.
