Softball Falls Late to McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Despite jumping out to an early 3-0 lead, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team couldn't hold on and fell short 4-3 in late innings to McNeese in game one of the conference series Friday night at Joe Miller Field.

The Islanders (21-19, 9-10 SLC) scored two early and led through the top of the sixth where they added another to make it 3-0. Though, a costly error in the bottom of the sixth allowed McNeese (36-14, 16-3 SLC) to knot it up at 3-3 before the Cowgirls were able to walk it off in the seventh for the 4-3 win.

The twins of seniors Gabriella Torres and Alexandria Torres each went 2-for-4 at the plate, including the latter registering a double. G. Torres drove her sister home on the play for the first run of the day.

Senior Quinn De Avila and sophomores Paolina Baez and Monee Montilla also registered hits on the night, with Baez also scoring one of the runs. Junior Kimane Rogron scored the final run for the Islanders in the sixth.

Through 6.1 innings, junior Primrose Aholelei only gave up one earned run and struck out six in the process. She kept the Cowgirls scoreless through five consecutive innings.

The Islanders were quiet through the opening two innings, before A. Torres doubled down the left field line in the third to spark some momentum in the A&M-Corpus Christi dugout. Baez then singled in the next at-bat to place two runners in scoring position before G. Torres singled through to right side to drive in her sister.

Up 1-0 with runners at the corners, G. Torres distracted the Cowgirls with a rundown but made her way safe with the stolen base as Baez scored on the play.

Rogron reached base in the sixth and stole second to get into scoring position. De Avila's single up the middle advanced Rogron to third before making it home on the next play off Montilla's sacrifice fly.

Despite the 3-0 lead, McNeese tied it up in the sixth as the teams headed to the final inning of regulation knotted up. The Islanders then got two on base in the top of the seventh but couldn't plate another run as the Cowgirls walked it off in the bottom frame.

Games two and three of the series will be played as a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.

The Islanders have won game three in each series and have been undefeated on Saturdays in conference play.
