LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader to McNeese 7-2 and 5-2 Saturday at Joe Miller Field.
The Islanders (21-21, 9-12 SLC) could only plate two runs in each game and hung with the Southland's top team until the Cowgirls (38-14, 18-3 SLC) used late innings in both for the edge.
Senior
Gabriella Torres registered two hits in both games and did so in each game of the series. Her sister,
Alexandria Torres, went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two while junior
Sidney Campion went 3-for-3. Campion scored one of the runs in both games of the doubleheader.
Juniors
Sydney Hoyt and
Primrose Aholelei each made a start in the circle. Hoyt started game one and struck out four through six innings, tying her season best. Aholelei added five strikeouts in game two to her season-total of 151 which continues to lead the league.
McNeese took an early lead to start the day, going up 4-0 through three. Though, the Islanders cut that lead in half in the top of the fourth as Hoyt and junior
Juliana J. Garcia each drew back-to-back walks. Campion pinch ran for Hoyt, and both her and Garcia reached home in the inning to make it a 4-1 game.
A&M-Corpus Christi's momentum was cut short, however, as a big fifth inning for the Cowgirls pulled them ahead 7-2 for the win.
Game two had McNeese score first again, this time with two runs in the fourth. The Islanders responded in the next frame Campion doubled to right center to get into scoring position. A. Torres reached on the infield single before the passed ball scored Campion from second and advanced A. Torres to third.
G. Torres hit the second double of the inning for the Islanders to send her sister home as the game got knotted up 2-2.
A&M-Corpus Christi couldn't hold off the Cowgirls, though, as they used a three-run sixth inning to gain the 5-2 advantage. The Islanders threatened in their last effort and had runners at the corners, but they couldn't convert as McNeese took the win in game three of the series.
The Torres sisters combined for 11 of A&M-Corpus Christi's 20 hits over the series. Gabriella is now on a 10-game streak of reaching base while Alexandria is at four games.
The Islanders will close out the conference slate next weekend at home. They will host UIW in the three-game series to also close out play at home, as A&M-Corpus Christi will honor A. Torres, G. Torres, De Avila, and
Shelbie Fickling in a special senior day recognition on Saturday.
The Islanders are still fighting for seeding in the SLC Tournament, scheduled for May 9-12 in Lake Charles. They are currently in a three-way tie for fifth with HCU and Lamar heading into the final weekend of conference play.
