NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team beat Northwestern State 5-1 in game three to salvage the series Saturday at the Lady Demon Diamond.
The Islanders (21-18, 9-9 SLC) relied on big second and third innings to jump out to the 5-0 lead while junior
Primrose Aholelei kept the Lady Demons (23-20, 9-9 SLC) to just one run to secure the win. A&M-Corpus Christi has now won game three in every conference series they've played this year.
Junior
Kimane Rogron got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the second to plate herself and junior
Sydney Hoyt who drew the lead-off walk.
Singles by junior
Alina Jasso and senior
Alexandria Torres placed two Islanders on base in the third before a Northwestern State error sent Jasso home on the next play. With two runners on, senior
Gabriella Torres drove in both with the single to right center for the 5-0 lead.
The Lady Demons plated a run in the next frame, but it was all Aholelei would allow. Through the seven innings she pitched, Aholelei struck out four and only gave up five hits.
It marked Aholelei's 20
th complete-game of the year and continues to lead the conference in innings pitched at 161.2. Her four strikeouts on the day took her season-total to 140 which also leads the Southland.
Also registering hits on the day was junior
Juliana J. Garcia and sophomore
Paolina Baez.
The Islanders will remain on the road next week as they head west to McNeese for the three-game series beginning on Friday.
