NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team fell short 2-1 and 6-3 in a tough doubleheader loss to Northwestern State Friday night at the Lady Demon Diamond.
The Islanders (20-18, 8-9 SLC) had a game one victory in sight before Northwestern State (23-19, 9-8 SLC) plated two in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off 2-1. The Lady Demons took that momentum into game two where they won 6-3 as A&M-Corpus Christi's bats fell just short.
Junior
Sydney Hoyt drove in three of the runs for A&M-Corpus Christi on the day, including herself after a solo home run in the fourth inning of game one. She helped the Islanders to a 1-0 lead for three innings before NWST responded just in time with two in the seventh for the win despite junior
Primrose Aholelei keeping them scoreless for the first six innings.
In game two, Hoyt singled to left field to send both senior
Alexandria Torres and junior
Juliana J. Garcia home as the Islanders finally got on the board in the fifth after trailing 6-0.
The defense posted the three up, three down in the fifth before loading the bases with no one out in the sixth spurred by the lead-off hit by sophomore
Monee Montilla. Garcia then helped cut NWST's lead in half 6-3 after driving Montilla home on the play but it was all the Islanders could get.
Hoyt showed her two-way ability in game two by retiring the next three straight in the circle after entering in relief in the second inning. With their last chance, the Islanders headed to the seventh but couldn't chip the deficit as the Lady Demons closed out the 6-3 win.
Along with Hoyt, senior
Quinn De Avila was the only other Islander to register a hit in both games.
Game three is scheduled for a noon pitch on Saturday and can be watched live on ESPN+. The Islanders have won every game three in conference this year.
