CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Extending its winning-streak to six matches, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program defeated Nicholls 4-1 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference Championships at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The third-seeded Islanders grinded out the doubles point against the sixth-seeded Colonels and followed it up with a trio of straight-set singles victories. Men's tennis improved to 23-5 in SLC Tournament matches under head coach
Steve Moore.
In doubles, senior
Pascal Lorieul and junior
Avery Zavala – an All-Conference First-Team doubles squad – registered a 6-2 win on court one. Seniors
Ulysse Bertrand and
Matthieu Peres clinched it 6-4 on court two after trailing for most of the set.
Lorieul won his second match of the day 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. It came after Peres won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and freshman
Lucas Schurdevin won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.
The men improved to 21-0 against Nicholls under Moore.
The men are on a quest for their 22nd championship and 10th SLC Tournament title. Islanders Tennis has won 31 championships overall and six in the last three seasons.
A&M-Corpus Christi advanced to the semifinals and will face seventh-seeded UIW at 6 p.m. Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Islanders beat the Cardinals 5-2 in the regular season matchup. The top-seeded women will play Friday at 10 a.m. against Nicholls.
