CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After a grueling seven-game road stretch, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball returns to Chapman Field to host UTRGV Tuesday evening in the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Credit Union.
"It's always a big rivalry game and the first time to play them at home this year," said head coach
Scott Malone. "We played well against them at home last year and would like to see that trend continue with our guys."
The Islanders and Vaqueros have played twice this season, both times in Edinburg, Texas, and have split the series 1-1 so far. The win on the road for A&M-Corpus Christi was the first over UTRGV in their territory since 2018.
A&M-Corpus Christi comes off a weekend on the road against McNeese in which weather played a factor in forcing a doubleheader on Friday. The blue and green claimed the second game of the weekend in which sophomore
Kyle Dickey earned his first collegiate victory.
Evans Hendricks, a junior, made his first start on the mound this prior weekend in the same game Dickey was in and pitched six innings, only allowing one hit in the performance while striking out eight batters.
The Islanders lead the conference in batting average and hits with 0.313 and 340 on the season. Within hits, the team ranks 18th in the nation and second in the nation with 18 triples on the season.
The South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Credit Union is an annual competition between both schools as each team takes on the other twice, once at home and once on the road, to determine the winner of the trophy.
Tuesday's matchup starts at 6 p.m. and is available to be streamed on ESPN+ with a subscription.
