CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After dropping the first two of the series, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team powered through five Nicholls pitchers to garner the 9-4 win in game three Saturday at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (15-15, 3-6 SLC) got back to a .500 pct on the season after not having possessed a losing record all year prior to the weekend with Nicholls (20-14, 7-5 SLC). A&M-Corpus Christi was able to do so after registering 12 hits on the day to average .429 at the plate as a team, it's best against an SLC opponent this year.
Three Islanders knocked two hits, including junior
Sidney Campion who went 2-for-3 while also scoring and driving in two runs. Junior
Juliana J. Garcia also scored twice and hit her first double of the season which drove in A&M-Corpus Christi's first run of the day.
Junior
Primrose Aholelei threw the complete-game, her 14
th this year, and only gave up two earned runs. Her three strikeouts on the day brought her season-total to 100, making her just the second pitcher in the Southland to record 100 strikeouts so far this year.
After each team was kept scoreless in the first, A&M-Corpus Christi turned in a big second inning to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. Junior
Taniece Tyson hit the lead-off single before senior
Quinn De Avila advanced her with the sacrifice bunt. In scoring position, Garcia doubled to right center for the RBI as Tyson made it home.
Up 1-0, Campion notched the RBI-single to score sophomore
Paolina Baez who drew a walk to reach base. A throwing error then plated Garcia before junior
Sydney Hoyt hit A&M-Corpus Christi's second double of the inning to also drive in Campion for the 4-0 lead.
Nicholls didn't respond until the fourth, however, they managed to plate three to make it a one-run game.
The Islanders wouldn't let them get closer, though, as they answered in the next frame. Junior
Alina Jasso led them off with a single up the middle while Campion drew the walk for runners on first and second. Jasso stole third and allowed senior
Gabriella Torres to send her home after the single to left field.
Up 5-3, junior
Kimane Rogron drove in Campion from third with the single before Tyson scored sophomore
Riley Todd who pinch ran for Hoyt off the sacrifice hit to make it a 4-run game again.
Garcia registered her second hit in the fifth with an infield single. She got herself into scoring position after stealing second and Campion sent one to right center to plate Garcia as the Islanders led it 8-3. A&M-Corpus Christi's final run of the day came in the sixth after senior
Alexandria Torres scored as a pinch runner after Jasso got the infield single.
Nicholls plated another in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-4 game, but Aholelei got the final batter swinging to salvage the series for the Islanders.
The Islanders will next head to Texas A&M-Commerce next weekend to continue SLC play. Friday will feature a doubleheader under the lights as game one is set for a 4 p.m. pitch.
