Beltran Leads A&M-Corpus Christi to Fifth-Place Finish at UTRGV

MCALLEN, Texas – Steady play at the top of the lineup resulted in a fifth-place showing for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program on Tuesday at the UTRGV Invitational at the McAllen Country Club.
 
The Islanders were paced by senior Maria Beltran who turned in a 73 in the final round for a top-10 score of 218. It came after she registered a 69 in round two Monday.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi tallied an 894 overall. It was 26 strokes better than its 920 score in the same tournament last year. The Islanders sat at 592 after two rounds Monday, which was the third-best 36-hole total in school history.
 
Sophomore Reagan Gray remained consistent with a 224 total for a top-15 placement. She shot a pair of 75's in the tournament, sandwiched around a 74 in round two.
 
A pair of Islanders tied for 21st as senior Lucy Martinez and junior Reese Drezins recorded 228's. One shot behind was freshman Elsa Tornvall with a 229.

"Not the final round we were hoping for. Maria had a strong tournament and Reagan a top-15 finish. We're looking to build from their performances and get better play from rest of team," said head coach Pat Stephens. "HCU's tournament is a few days away. The field of teams are always good and River Bend Country Club will be a challenge."
 
The Islanders have a quick turnaround as they play again next week in the HCU Intercollegiate in Houston.
