CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Riding a four-game win streak, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball is scheduled to play host to Texas Southern at Chapman Field Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. as the two teams meet for their lone time this season.
"I think we're going to get to some of our better arms that we didn't get to use over the weekend," said head coach
Scott Malone. "
James Trimble is going to go first and has been really good this year.
Austin Dean,
Samuel Feltz, and
Jaime Ramirez Jr. are all ready to go."
The Islanders look to maintain their momentum as they come off of a four-game sweep over Lindenwood over the weekend. The blue and green of A&M-Corpus Christi threw two shutout games while piling up 32 combined runs in the performances.
The Islanders boast a 28-3-1 all-time record against the Tigers, holding an 11-game win streak over them dating back to the 2006 season.
Junior
Colin Purcell was recognized at the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week after making his second start within a week, going on to throw a complete game shutout over the Lions in which he allowed only one hit. He pitched earlier that week against Power Five opponent Utah where he went for six innings. Purcell combined for 11 strikeouts between the two duels.
Six members of the team hold a batting average over .300, all of them making appearances in at least nine games with 27 or more plate appearances. True freshman
Christian Smith-Johnson highlights the group, sitting at .389 with 14 hits on 36 at-bats. He's made his way home to score eight times on the season and hit two doubles thus far.
A&M-Corpus Christi is tied for the most triples in the highest level of collegiate baseball with UTSA, having hit three throughout 12 games. The two shutouts place them at seventh in the nation as well. Combining the bats of the Islanders, the team is 21st in the nation with a combined batting average of 0.321 which leads the conference.
Texas Southern comes into the game with a 7-6 record and will play Tuesday night against Texas-Wesleyan before making the trip to Corpus Christi.
The matchup begins at 6:30 p.m. and will have live stats to follow along.
