CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's
Colin Purcell was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week one day after a complete game shutout performance.
"Colin has been outstanding all season," said head coach
Scott Malone. "His focus and the way he goes about his weekly preparation has been on another level this year. He had two frontline starts for us this week and the one-hitter against Lindenwood was one of the best three or four starts I have seen a pitcher have in my 16 years on the Island."
Purcell, a junior, assisted the Islanders to a four-game sweep of Lindenwood by pitching a complete game shutout less than a week after making a start against Power Five opponent Utah. He earned both starts on the mound and combined for 15 innings pitched on the week.
Purcell limited the Lions to one hit over nine innings with 88 pitches on the day. He struck out eight batters on the day while only allowing one walk.
Earlier in the week, he made a midweek start against the Utes in a six-inning outing after the Kleberg Bank College Classic. During the outing, Purcell struck out three batters on the day with 86 pitches thrown.
The junior has recorded two wins on the season for an unblemished record on the 2023 campaign with a victory over UT Arlington in the season opener and against the Lions.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to Chapman Field to face Texas Southern Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
