CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program was in full control from start to finish Saturday in a 4-0 sweep over BYU at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
A&M-Corpus Christi led on every doubles court and won the first set in five of six singles matches to run away with the match. Men's tennis improved to 8-4 on the season.
"We are very proud of the effort today. The guys competed with a lot of heart and fight, and really lifted each other up with their energy. We are growing and maturing every match and these guys have tremendous character. BYU has a great team and we have great respect for them, so this was a big win for our program today," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The Islanders got off to a quick start by winning court three of doubles 6-2 with senior
Ulysse Bertrand and freshman
Lucas Schurdevin. They clinched doubles on court two with a 6-3 win by senior
Nathan Schwartz and freshman
Tomas Quesada Perez. A&M-Corpus Christi also led 5-4 in an unfinished match on court one with senior
Pascal Lorieul and junior
Avery Zavala.
Lorieul and Schwartz followed it up in singles with identical 6-2, 6-4 scores on courts two and three, respectively. It came after Bertrand cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
The Islanders also led in a pair of unfinished matches. Senior
Matthieu Peres was up a set on court four, while Quesada Perez nearly completed his match and was ahead 6-2, 5-3 on court six.
As a team, the men improved to 38-15 (.717) in singles on the season.
Both the A&M-Corpus Christi men and women will head to UTRGV on Sunday for rematches in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
