CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball dropped a grueling 3-2 game one before falling 6-1 in game two to Nicholls on Friday at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (14-15, 2-6 SLC) struck early in both games but Nicholls (20-13, 7-4 SLC) managed to end on top each time. Game one had the Islanders tie things up in the bottom of the seventh 2-2 to force extra innings, though, the Colonels took it 3-2 before pulling out a 6-1 win in game two.
Seven different Islanders registered a hit on the day, including senior
Gabriella Torres who went a perfect 3-for-3 in game two. Senior
Quinn De Avila also turned in a multi-hit performance on the day, notching two in game one.
All three available pitchers saw time in the circle today, with junior
Primrose Aholelei starting game one. She threw the complete-game, the seventh in her last eight appearances. She struck out five while junior
Sydney Hoyt, who started game two, struck out four.
With two outs in game one, De Avila doubled to get into scoring position in the second. Junior
Sidney Campion then tripled down the right field line to send De Avila home for the 1-0 lead.
Nicholls responded and scored a run in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, De Avila singled up the middle to spark some late momentum. Back-to-back singles then allowed sophomore
Paolina Baez to drive in the tying run and take the game to extra innings, though, Nicholls would be the only team to score in the eighth for the win.
Game two saw both teams score early as Torres doubled down left to send Baez home all the way from first. Tied 1-1 after one, the Colonels kept the Islanders scoreless the rest of the way to close out the 6-1 win.
Like its previous two conference series, A&M-Corpus Christi will look to salvage the weekend with a win in game three. The series finale is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday and will be streamed on ESPN+.
