Men’s Basketball Trio Earns All-Conference, Murdix Defensive Player of the Year, Lutz Coach of the Year

March 03, 2023

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program was well-represented on the Southland Conference postseason awards as seniors Terrion Murdix and Isaac Mushila were named to the All-Conference First-Team and senior Trevian Tennyson to the All-Conference Second-Team.

Additionally, Murdix was tabbed the SLC Defensive Player of the Year and head coach Steve Lutz was voted the SLC Coach of the Year.

It marked just the second time in school history that the Islanders won either Defensive Player of the Year or Coach of the Year. Rashawn Thomas was Defensive Player of the Year in 2015-16 and Ronnie Arrow was Coach of the Year in 2006-07.

Furthermore, it's the first time in school history that A&M-Corpus Christi garnered three student-athletes on the All-Conference Teams in the same season.

Murdix becomes a two-time SLC All-Defensive Team honoree. He led the league and ranked 12th in the nation in steals per game with 2.34. Murdix also led the conference in assists for the second consecutive year with 5.6 per outing, which ranked 19th in the country. He averaged 13.7 points per game and is coming off a career-high 27 points at Texas A&M-Commerce.

Mushila becomes a two-time All-Conference selection after being named to the Second-Team last year. He led the SLC and ranked 16th in the nation in rebounding with 9.8 per game to go along with 14.9 points per outing. Mushila ranked 22nd in the country in double-doubles with 12, which is one shy of tying the school's single-season record.

Tennyson also registered All-Conference honors for the second straight season after earning Third-Team nods last year. Tennyson led the team in scoring both on the season (15.8 ppg) and in conference (18.6 ppg). He's already broken the school record for threes made in a season with 94 and shot .486 from long range in conference.

Lutz's squad, which has won 10 of the last 11 games, led the SLC in eight statistical categories including scoring, scoring defense, rebounding, assists and free throw percentage. His team outrebounded 16 of 18 teams in conference. The .791 free throw percentage ranks sixth in the country. Lutz guided the Islanders to championships in consecutive seasons after winning the SLC Tournament last year.
