CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Battling back after dropping the doubles point, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program shined in singles in a 4-2 victory over UT Arlington on Saturday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (12-6) were up a set in five singles matches to begin the comeback. They won a pair of straight-setters and a three-setter before senior
Nathan Schwartz clinched on court three 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
"This was a high character win today and it was all about heart. UTA has a very tough and talented team, and this has been such a long, respectful rivalry for 25 years! Our guys just dug deep today and played from the 'inside out' with heart and character. I'm incredibly proud of them," said head coach
Steve Moore.
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Islanders did win on court one. Senior
Pascal Lorieul and junior
Avery Zavala team for a convincing 6-1 victory.
It carried into singles for both Zavala and Lorieul as they submitted 2-0 days. Zavala ousted Anton Shepp 6-2, 6-4 on court one, and Lorieul topped Solano Caffarena 6-3, 6-1 on court two.
A&M-Corpus Christi went up 3-1 overall after senior
Matthieu Peres came back for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4. Schwartz's clincher came after nearly three hours of play.
The Islanders also led in an unfinished match on court six. Freshman
Tomas Quesada Perez was up 6-2, 6-7 (5), 4-2 when play was halted.
A&M-Corpus Christi will close out the weekend with a home women's match at 11 a.m. Sunday against Northwestern State on Senior Day.
