CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In the series finale of opening conference weekend, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team held on for a 5-4 victory over HCU Friday at Cabaniss Field.
The Islanders (13-11, 1-2 SLC) turned in its best offensive performance of the weekend in game three to prevent HCU (11-16, 2-1 SLC) from earning the series sweep. Off seven hits, A&M-Corpus Christi was able to plate five runs, four of which came in the third, to garner the advantage.
The five runs all came from different players as the Islanders utilized a team-effort. Junior
Sidney Campion registered a hit, run and RBI on the day.
Sophomore
Paolina Baez recorded her third multi-hit game of the season after going 2-for-3 at the plate. She also drove in one of A&M-Corpus Christi's five runs.
Junior
Primrose Aholelei threw for 4.1 innings in which she only gave up two earned runs to be credited with her ninth win of the season. Junior
Sydney Hoyt relieved her in the fifth and pitched the final eight outs for the save, her third of the year.
Both teams were kept quiet in the first, but sophomore
Monee Montilla ran home off the single by freshman
Juliana A. Garcia to get the Islanders on the board in the second.
With the 1-0 lead, A&M-Corpus Christi stranded a Husky in the third and then exploded in the bottom frame to plate four more. Junior
Kimane Rogron reached base after being hit by pitch before sophomore
Rhea-Ann Avalos advanced her with the base-hit. An HCU error loaded the bases and Rogron ran home off the infield single by Campion.
Another hit by pitch drove in another run, and back-to-back walks drawn by Baez and junior
Taniece Tyson had the Islanders score twice more for the 5-0 advantage.
The early barrage would hold strong, despite HCU plating runs in each of the next three innings. Up 5-4, Hoyt extinguished the threat in the top of the seventh to get the final three outs for A&M-Corpus Christi's first conference win of the season.
A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 27-20 all-time and 15-12 at home over the Huskies. With a 13-11 overall record, the Islanders have not possessed a losing record yet this year.
Next up, the Islanders will take on Prairie View A&M again on the road this time with a single midweek game on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The game will conclude the 2023 nonconference slate as the Islanders will get back to conference play on March 24 at Southeastern.
