CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – On a windy day, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team was narrowly edged 1-0 and 4-3 by HCU on opening day of the conference slate Thursday at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (12-11, 0-2 SLC) couldn't get their bats hot in game one and although junior
Primrose Aholelei only gave up one run through seven innings in the circle, it was enough for HCU (11-15, 2-0 SLC) to take the win.
Game two had the Islanders jump out first this time, with junior
Taniece Tyson running home twice for the 2-1 lead. The Huskies reversed the lead 4-2 through 6.5, and although the Islanders plated junior
Sidney Campion in the bottom of the seventh to try for the comeback, HCU closed out the 4-3 edge.
Tyson went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two, her second multi-hit of the season. In addition to scoring two of A&M-Corpus Christi's runs, her single is what drove in Campion for the third.
Multi-hit performances in game two were also turned in by junior
Kimane Rogron, sophomore
Monee Montilla, and sophomore Rhe-Ann Avalos. Montilla was the only Islander to hit a double on the day, which drove in Tyson in the fourth.
Rogron records the most multi-hit games on the season while it marked Montilla and Avalos' firsts.
Campion paired her run with a hit of her own as the lead-off in the seventh of game two. Sophomore
Paolina Baez also registered a hit in the second game of the day, a single to left in the sixth.
Three Islanders saw time in the circle, with Aholelei striking out five in game one before junior
Sydney Hoyt and sophomore
Siarah Galvan each struck out a pair in game two.
The five strikeouts kept Aholelei atop the Southland standings with 77 on the season.
A&M-Corpus Christi continues to lead the Huskies 26-20 all-time and 14-12 all-time at home. With the 12-11 record, the Islanders have not possessed a losing record yet this year.
First pitch of game three is set for Friday at 12 p.m.
