SAN ANTONIO – Still undefeated on the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program downed Abilene Christian 4-1 in a neutral court match Monday.
The Islanders (11-0) are off to their best start since 2015-16 when they went 24-0 prior to the NCAA Tournament. A&M-Corpus Christi beat an ACU squad which has wins over UTSA, Oral Roberts and New Mexico.
A&M-Corpus Christi took care of business in doubles where it led on all three courts. Junior
Emma Aucagne and freshman
Palina Saulevich started it off with a 6-1 victory on court two, and juniors
Kateryna Rublevska and
Valeria Cherfus clinched it 6-3 on court three.
The Islanders also led in an unfinished doubles match on court one. Junior
Naomi Moi McKenzie and freshman
Sofia Pinto were a game away with a 5-4 lead.
A&M-Corpus Christi kept rolling in singles. Aucagne cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 and Pinto followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3.
The clinching match came at No. 5 where Cherfus finished off Andrea Guerrero 6-4, 7-5. The Islanders also led in a pair of unfinished third sets as senior
Victoire Delattre was up 4-0 and Rublevska led 1-0.
The women are now 52-5 (.912) as a team in singles and Aucagne is 8-0 at No. 1.
Both the men and women will be in action Wednesday when they face Rice in a 2 p.m. road match.
