CHICAGO – In the first indoor match of the season for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program, Illinois-Chicago was able to sneak away with a 4-3 outcome at the XS Tennis Village.
Â
It was the conference opener for both teams as UIC joined the league this year as an affiliate member over the summer. A&M-Corpus Christi is the defending SLC regular season champion.
Â
The Flames got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point, but the Islanders responded by winning five first sets in singles. The first win came at No. 4 where senior
Matthieu Peres notched a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi also garnered straight-set wins on courts one and three. Junior
Avery Zavala won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 and reigning SLC Player of the Week winner
Nathan Schwartz won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
Â
However, the match ultimately came down to a pair of three-setters that both ended in favor of the Flames.
Â
The men will be in action again Wednesday when they travel to Rice for a 2 p.m. start. Prior to that, the women's team will take-on Abilene Christian in a neutral court match Monday at 11 a.m. in San Antonio.
