SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball program (7-8) fell to UTSA (13-3) 31-6 in the second game of the series Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
Moving quickly in the bottom of the first, the Roadrunners scored two runs for an early lead. A&M-Corpus Christi struck back in the top of the second as junior
Tre Jones sent a ball out of the park over the batter's eye to cut the lead in half. Two back-to-back singles placed runners on first and second, priming junior
Sebastian Trinidad for an RBI with the Islanders' fourth hit on the day. Classmate
Jose Enriquez scored on another single by senior
Jake Johnson before UTSA scored in the ensuing half-inning to tie the game at three.
All tied up heading into the fourth, the Islanders struck again as senior
Brendan Ryan hit a double to left field, coming home on a single by
Leo Markotic (senior) two batters later. After putting a zero on the board in the third, UTSA homered to left field to tie the game once again at four apiece. The Roadrunners would go on to score nine more runs to hold a 13-4 advantage after the conclusion of the fourth inning. The Roadrunners plated two more in the fifth inning before scoring four in the sixth for a 19-4 advantage.
The Islanders plated one more run in the top of the seventh inning as senior
Jake Johnson came home on a sacrifice fly by junior
Diego Johnson. In the bottom of the seventh, the Roadrunners scored six more runs. Scoring concluded in the bottom of the eighth inning with a run by the Roadrunners.
Zach Garcia, a sophomore, pitched three innings on the day and earned two strikeouts in the process. Junior
James Burchett came in relief during the fourth inning and recorded an out before classmate
Sean Sieve entered the game.
Dann Blanchard, a junior, came into the game in the fourth inning to close it down for the Islanders.
Blanchard pitched through the fifth inning as freshman
Nash Villegas came in for the sixth to close out the inning, going two-thirds of the way into the seventh. Redshirt sophomore
Matthew Watson entered the game with one out on the board in the seventh inning for the Islanders.
The Islanders earned 13 hits on the day with two extra-base hits coming from a double and a home run for five runs on the day.
A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA conclude the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field and will be streamed on CUSA.TV.
