Islanders Win SLC Opener at HCU in Weekend Finale

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beach volleyball program split day two of the Third Coast College Classic, falling to #3 TCU 5-0 in the morning before sweeping HCU 5-0 in the afternoon.

The Islanders (2-2) conclude opening weekend with the split record but came away with two 5-0 sweeps. The win over HCU was the first conference matchup for the Islanders this year, who has now won 20 consecutive regular season matches against SLC opponents dating back to 2019.

It was the first meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and HCU since the championship match of the 2022 SLC Tournament, which the Islanders won 3-2 to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

"Not bad for opening weekend," said head coach Gayle Stammer. "We had a slow start against UAB which was really the only time we didn't play up to our standard. I am very pleased with our strong conference opener against HCU!"

The duo of Kela Moreno and Shea Slusser on court five notched a 21-12 win in set two over the nationally ranked Frogs to force a third but was edged out 15-11. Though, the pair quickly beat HCU 21-11, 21-16 to give the Islanders an immediate 1-0 edge over the Huskies to end the weekend with a team-best 7-2 set record.

Courts two and four also got recorded a straight-set win over the Huskies. Hannah Doyle and Maria Duda Fernandes de Melo grinded out a 21-18, 22-20 victory on court four before Kristin Bobay and Chloe Tome clinched the match with a 21-19, 21-15 decision.

Jade Bennett and Tori Johnson paired on court three for the day. They got behind one set to HCU's fours before rallying for dominate 21-11 and 15-6 wins in sets two and three for the win. Kiley Lewis and Giuliana Poletti Corrales also dropped one set to the Huskies but earned the 15-12 edge in set three to complete the 5-0 sweep

The Islanders are chipping into HCU's lead in the all-time record, now trailing just 13-11. A&M-Corpus Christi has now won the last five meetings against the Huskies.

Next up, the Islanders will travel to Florida for three days of matches next weekend. They will face #16 Florida International in a Thursday afternoon matchup before heading down the road to compete in #12 Florida Atlantic's tournament on Friday and Saturday.
