BATON ROUGE, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team faced another tough day against a pair of Louisiana schools, dropping a close 5-2 decision in the morning to UL-Lafayette before falling 12-0 to nationally ranked LSU Saturday night at Tiger Park.
The Islanders (7-5) couldn't heat up their bats on day two of the LSU/ULL Crossover. Junior
Taniece Tyson blasted a two-run home run in the first inning against the Ragin Cajuns, but the Islanders would not reach home plate again on the day.
Junior
Primrose Aholelei started the day in the circle and pitched her third complete-game of the season, though, first complete-game loss. She struck out three ULL batters and posted two three up, three down innings.
Sophomore
Siarah Galvan got the starting job against #14 LSU and put it 1.1 innings of work before freshman
Ariella Saenz relieved her. Both pitchers got at least one Tiger swinging for the strikeout.
Sophomore
Monee Montilla registered a hit in both games as the first baseman.
LSU is 14-1 on the year after dropping its first loss of the season to UL-Lafayette (8-5) in the game right before they faced the Islanders. The Tigers are ranked 14
th nationally, while the Ragin Cajuns are receiving votes in the AP Poll.
GAME ONE – UL-Lafayette 5, Islanders 2
ULL struck early for the 2-0 lead after the top of the first, though, the Islanders would answer in the bottom frame.
Junior
Kimane Rogron notched a two-out single through the left side to get herself on base before Tyson homered to left field to tie the game up at 2-2.
The Islanders got in scoring position in the third off the singles by Montilla and sophomore
Alina Jasso, but it would be the Ragin Cajuns to score next as they plated one run in the top of the fourth.
Another threat by A&M-Corpus Christi came in the next frame as sophomore
Paolina Baez doubled to left as the lead-off. She advanced to third on the sacrifice bunt by freshman
Juliana A. Garcia, but the Islanders were left stranded the rest of the way while ULL scored two more in the seventh for the 5-2 edge.
GAME TWO – #14 LSU 12, Islanders 0 (5 innings)
LSU plated two runs in the first, but Montilla singled as the lead-off hitter in the second to try and respond. Though, the Tigers proved their national ranking by scoring eight runs in the next frame to lead it 10-0 after two.
Senior
Alexandria Torres registered a hit in the third to place two Islanders on base after freshman
Crystal Davila reached on an error. The Islanders couldn't capitalize but used a strong fielding effort in the bottom inning to keep LSU scoreless in the third.
Two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth added on to LSU's lead and the Islanders couldn't respond to fall 12-0 on the night.
The Islanders will head to Lafayette to close out its weekend in the Bayou, taking on ULL again on their turf for a 12 p.m. pitch on Sunday. It will be the final game before A&M-Corpus Christi has its home opener on Tuesday against UTSA.
