CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball (3-3) earned a dominating 12-2 run-rule victory over Houston (2-4) in its second game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field Saturday night in seven innings.
"It's a big night for us," said head coach
Scott Malone. "I told these guys we would play a really good Houston team and win. I believe in the club and feel it's a good club with older leadership and I never feel we're too far away from a good game."
Houston scored the first runs of the game with one run in both the third and fourth innings to take an early two-run lead before the Islanders took charge in the bottom of the fourth.
A&M-Corpus Christi saw five runners come in to score in the bottom of the fourth, led off by junior and senior Diego and
Jake Johnson off of a double by sophomore
Chance Reisdorph. In the next at-bat, senior
Leo Markotic helped the team take a 3-2 lead on a ground out by junior
Sebastian Trinidad.
Brendan Ryan, a senior, singled out to right field to allow Reisdorph to score before he stole second for his fifth stolen base of the season. Ryan earned the final run of the inning with freshman
Christian Smith-Johnson sending him home on a single for a 5-2 advantage.
Jose Enriquez, a junior, doubled in the bottom of the fifth inning as both Johnson's scored their second runs of the game. The two scoring runners extended the lead to 7-2.
A huge sixth inning gave the Islanders five more runs as freshman
Christian Smith-Johnson after having collected a stolen base shortly before.
Jake Johnson hit a triple with one out on the board to earn two RBIs as junior
Tre Jones and D. Johnson worked their way back to the base. The former Johnson scored in the ensuing play after forcing a pitching change. Enriquez was the final runner to score for A&M-Corpus Christi on the night.
Three Islanders took to the mound with redshirt
Matthew Watson taking the start, followed by juniors
Evans Hendricks and
Samuel Feltz.
Returning to the field Sunday at 3 p.m., the Islanders will take on the Utah Utes in their third-ever matchup to round out the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field.
