Jones' Homer Highlights Defeat at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's baseball program (2-2) fell to Texas (1-3) on the road 12-2 in the first road trip of the season at UFCU Disch-Falk Field Tuesday evening.

"Tre had a big swing and Zach went out and put up a zero to get us through the first inning," said head coach Scott Malone. " We talked about having Nash in the game at the end, but we were looking at him out there thinking this is what the future is going to look like so it was exciting to see him out there. It's going to come around and we're going to play better."

Tre Jones, a junior, kicked off the game early with a solo home run to center field, over the batter's eye to give the Islanders an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, the Longhorns struck back with a home run of their own to tie the game at one.

Texas took the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs scored to give the Longhorns a 4-1 advantage. They extended the lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning with six runs. Senior Jake Johnson scored a run for the Islanders in the top of the seventh inning to cut into the Longhorns' lead 10-2. The Longhorns scored one run in both the seventh and eighth inning to round out scoring on the night with a 12-2 lead.

Sophomore Zach Garcia started on the mound for the Islanders and went on for 2.2 innings with one strikeout before junior Colin Purcell came in for relief. Purcell faced 12 batters in the appearance for two full innings and two strikeouts. In the bottom of the fifth, Marco Gutierrez, a sophomore, took his place on the mound for the Islanders.

After 1.1 innings of work on the mound, Gutierrez finished the night with no errors and a 0.00 ERA with a strikeout. Evans Hendricks, a junior, entered the game at the bottom of the seventh for his second appearance of the season. After sitting down each of the three batters he faced, Hendricks left the game as freshman Nash Villegas made his way to the mound to complete the game for A&M-Corpus Christi.

Jake Johnson was one of two batters to reach multiple hits on the night with a lead-off double in the top of the seventh inning. He converted the double into a run score with the help of juniors Jose Enriquez and Sebastian Trinidad. Jones was the first to have two hits with his home run and a single in the sixth inning.

Junior Diego Johnson earned a hit on the night with a hit in the sixth as well on the at-bat before Jones took the plate. Chance Reisdorph, a sophomore, earned a hit in the top of the ninth after coming to as catcher for junior Josh Caraway.

A&M-Corpus Christi continues the season at Whataburger Field against UIW Friday night at 6 p.m. in the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
