Women’s Tennis Blanks Sam Houston 7-0 to Remain Undefeated

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Improving to 8-0 on the year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program notched a convincing 7-0 sweep over Sam Houston on Sunday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

The Islanders won the doubles point and quickly won three singles matches to clinch. The teams played out the remaining matches and A&M-Corpus Christi pulled out a trio of three-setters.

"We beat a very good team today in a match that was much closer than the score. We had to really dig deep in many positions. Our girls showed great heart and determination and are growing tremendously. Some of our girls got off to slow starts trying to do too much, but they got back to their process and were aggressive and disciplined. I'm really proud of our team," said head coach Steve Moore.

A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to an early lead with doubles wins on courts one and three. Juniors Valeria Cherfus and Kateryna Rublevska registered a 6-1 decision at No. 3, and junior Naomi Moi McKenzie and freshman Sofia Pinto clinched with a 6-3 final at No. 1.

Rublevska cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in singles at No. 6 and senior Victoire Delattre breezed to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5. Pinto then clinched her second match of the day 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3.

On court four, Cherfus pulled out a back-and-forth affair 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 over Sahithi Vutukuru.

The final two matches were grinders. Senior Emma Aucagne was down a set and down in the second when she came back to even the score. In a third set super tiebreaker, both players saved match points as Aucagne outlasted Megan Basson in a 15-13 marathon.

McKenzie found herself in a hole when she came back twice. She dropped the first set 6-1 before responding with a 6-2 frame in the second. McKenzie found herself down 5-1 in the third when she battled back to beat Paula Cerda 7-5.
