A&M-Corpus Christi Welcomes 15 Institutions for Islander Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The annual home spring tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday when the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program hosts the Islander Classic at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
 
Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day. The course is 6,112 yards and a par 72.
 
The Islanders will welcome Bryant, Creighton, Drake, HCU, Lamar, McLennan College, Omaha, Prairie View A&M, Southern Illinois, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Tennessee Tech, UT Arlington, UTRGV and Valparaiso. The tournament will also count towards the South Texas Showdown standings against the Vaqueros, presented by Rally Credit Union.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi will showcase its same lineup from the spring opener with senior Maria Beltran, senior Lucy Martinez, junior Reese Drezins, sophomore Reagan Gray and freshman Elsa Tornvall.
 
"The team is looking forward to being at home for the Islander Classic. We've had a very good week of practice and feel confident. We showed what we are capable of the last round at Texas State. Our goal is to continue that focus and get better each round we play," said head coach Pat Stephens.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi opened its spring season with a third-place finish at the Texas State Invitational on Feb. 6-7. It included a 285 (+1) score in round three, which was the second-best round in program history. The Islanders carded a 901 (+49) overall.
 
The tournament included big showings from Tornvall and Beltran. Tornvall placed a team-high 11th individually with a 69 in round three, while Beltran was tallied a career-low 68 in the final round and ended in 12th.
 
The Islanders have performed well historically in their home tournament. Last year they placed third out of 18 and in 2021 they took second out of 11.
