CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – One of the premiere collegiate tennis tournaments in the country will take place this weekend when the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program hosts the 59th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders will kick it off Friday at 9 a.m. against DePaul. The eight-team bracketed tournament also features UL-Lafayette, New Mexico State, Abilene Christian, Radford, Oral Roberts and UTSA.
A&M-Corpus Christi will play again Friday at 3 p.m. against either ULL or NMSU. The Islanders will wrap it up Saturday at either 9 a.m. or 12 p.m. based on Friday's results.
"This great event was started by H-E-B founder Howard E. Butt himself in 1964 as a tournament for elite college teams in Corpus Christi and has become widely considered one of the grand events in America! We are grateful beyond words at the generosity from Mr. Butt and H-E-B as title sponsors for 59 consecutive years," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The Islanders are 5-1 this year and are pitted with a DePaul team that went undefeated in the Big East Conference last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Demons are 5-5 this year with a marquee win at Purdue 5-2.
A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a doubleheader sweep over Prairie View A&M. Prior to that, the Islanders topped Southern Miss 5-2. Senior
Pascal Lorieul is a perfect 5-0 at singles, playing in the No. 1 and 2 positions.
As a team, the Islanders are 24-4 in singles.
The women's team will be at home Sunday when they host Sam Houston at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The women will be putting their undefeated 7-0 record on the line.
