Women's Basketball Looks to Bounce Back at Nicholls, McNeese

THIBODAUX, LA – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will look to break a three-game skid as it travels to play Nicholls at 5 p.m. Thursday at Stopher Gym and McNeese at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Legacy Center.
 
The Islanders (14-19, 9-4 SLC) will be going for the season sweeps over Nicholls (4-19, 1-11 SLC) and McNeese (9-15, 6-7 SLC). In the first meetings this season, A&M-Corpus Christi beat the Colonels 86-47 and the Cowgirls 78-61 in the midst of a six-game winning streak.
 
The 86 points against Nicholls was the most scored by the Islanders this season, who beat their previous-best of 80 against St. Thomas back on Dec. 12. It was also A&M-Corpus Christi's biggest win against a Southland opponent since Jan. 25, 2014, when the Islanders beat New Orleans 97-44, and first 30+ point victory over a conference foe since the 2019-20 season.
 
The Islanders now sit second in the Southland rankings after dropping to Southeastern, HCU and Lamar, though, they held just a -5.3-scoring margin in those three games.
 
Redshirt senior Makinna Serrata leads the team in scoring with 12.7 ppg (14.3 ppg in SLC). She is averaging a .493 field goal percentage on the season which ranks her in the top-five of the conference. In SLC play, she is 70-of-133 (.526) from the floor.
 
Also averaging in double figures is senior Alecia Westbrook with 12.5 ppg. She is averaging a double-double with 10.1 rebounds per game which leads the league (15.5 ppg/10.8 rpg in SLC play). Both Westbrook and Serrata surpassed 1,000 career points this season.
 
Junior Paige Allen is scoring 11.0 points per outing in league play. Sophomore Jaeda Whitner is shooting .405 (30-of-74) from the three-point line this season, which ranks her second in the Southland.
 
Nicholls has only garnered one win in conference play when it beat Lamar 80-74 in overtime. Lexi Alexander leads the Colonels who nears a double-double average with 14.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg. She has recorded a double-double in three of the last five games, including a 14-point and rebound performance in the first game this season with the Islanders.
 
McNeese averages 65.8 ppg this year, a conference-best, with six of its top scorers averaging at least 7.5 ppg. Desirae Hansen has been the constant in the Cowgirls' lineup in SLC play, where she is averaging 11.2 ppg.
 
The game at Nicholls can be watched on ESPN+, while the game on Saturday against McNeese has been moved to ESPN3. Both games can also be heard live for free on 1440 AM NewsTalk K-E-Y-S with Doug Kesterson on the calls.
 
NOTES
- A&M-Corpus Christi is 13-9 all-time against Nicholls and 12-9 over McNeese.  
 
- The Islanders are 87-76 all-time in the month of February. Under head coach Royce Chadwick, they are 100-84 all-time in the Southland Conference.
 
- The Islanders are undefeated in conference play when they shoot more free throws, shoot over 50 percent from the field, and shoot above 33.3 percent from the three-point line.
 
- The Islanders have held their opposition to under 60 points in 11 of 13 conference games, four of which were kept to under 50. Additionally, the Islanders have outrebounded the opposition also in 11 of 13 conference game this year.
 
- The Islanders nationally rank 23rd in scoring defense (55.5), and 41st in opponent field goal percentage (.367), which they lead the Southland in along with opponent 3FG percentage (.284).
 
- Individually, Westbrook nationally ranks 15th in defensive rebounds per game (7.5), 23rd in rebounds per game (10.1), 23rd in double-doubles (12), 24th in total rebounds (242), 30th in free throws attempted (145), and 31st in free throws made (110).
