A&M-Corpus Christi Concludes Opening Weekend with 6-3 Victory over ACU

ABILENE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team bounced back after a tough day two of the Wildcat Invitational, concluding opening weekend with a 3-2 record after topping Abilene Christian 6-3 on Sunday at Poly Wells Field.

The Islanders (3-2) swept the Wildcats (2-3) this weekend after dominating them in an 11-3 run-rule victory on Friday. A&M-Corpus Christi utilized another well-rounded offense to top ACU again in the weekend finale.

Junior Primrose Aholelei garnered her second win of the weekend after putting in six innings of work, while fellow junior Sydney Hoyt relieved her for the final three outs to earn the save.

Six Islanders got a hit, with four of them earning at least two. Junior Sidney Campion led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and two runs. Hoyt contributed as a two-way player, getting a pair of hits and RBIs.

Similar to Friday's meeting, the Islanders struck early as a trio of hits scored junior Juliana J. Garcia and Campion for the 2-0 lead. A&M-Corpus Christi's fielding then kept ACU scoreless in the next frame despite getting a runner on base.

The Wildcats homered in the bottom to get on the board, but Aholelei struck out the side to limit them to the one run.

ACU threatened the score again in the third and loaded the bases with two outs, though, Aholelei silenced the effort after catching the batter looking.

Back-to-back doubles by sophomore Paolina Baez and freshman Crystal Davila got the Islanders another run on the board in the fourth. The wild pitch drove Davila home and the Islanders led it 4-1 through four.

A&M-Corpus Christi scored twice more, once in the fifth as the sacrifice hit by senior Alexandria Torres batted in her sister Gabriella Torres for the 5-1 lead. The single-RBI by Hoyt drove Campion in in the sixth to give the Islanders the 6-1 advantage.

Hoyt then took to the circle to close out the seventh and although ACU plated two, she got the last batter swinging as the Islanders muffled the Wildcats' rally for the 6-3 win.

The Islanders will next travel to compete in the I-35 Tournament next weekend, split between San Marcos and San Antonio. They will face ACU once more to try and go three-for-three against the Wildcats next Sunday.
