A&M-Corpus Christi Outduels NMSU in 1-0 Victory

SAN MARCOS, Texas – In an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, junior Primrose Aholelei of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team outlasted New Mexico State to help the Islanders to a 1-0 victory Friday at Bobcat Softball Stadium.

The Islanders (4-2) was deadlocked through six innings with New Mexico State (3-2) before junior Sidney Campion drew the game-winning walk in a bases-loaded situation to score senior Quinn De Avila in the seventh. Aholelei then retired the next three straight batters in the bottom frame to post the complete-game shutout victory.

It was Aholelei's second of the season, after completing the same feat in A&M-Corpus Christi's season opener for a 1-0 win over Murray State. She now holds a 3-2 record and ERA.

Only three Islanders were able to earn a hit on the day, with junior Sydney Hoyt hitting a double in the opening inning. Junior Taniece Tyson's hit ended up being a game changer for the Islanders as it came in the top of the seventh to advance runners and load the bases.

Both teams placed a runner on base in the first, second and third innings, but neither could drive them in. Each team then had a three up, three down fourth inning to keep the game scoreless heading into the fifth.

Senior Gabriella Torres hit an infield single to reach base in the sixth, but the teams remained in a stalemate entering the final inning of regulation.

Sophomore Paolina Baez earned a spot on base after being hit by pitch in the top of the seventh. De Avila was walked, and Tyson's infield single loaded the bases. A fielder's choice had Baez out at home, but Campion headed to the plate with two outs and drew the walk to give the Islanders the 1-0 edge.

A&M-Corpus Christi's fielding then remained steady as they posted another three-up, three-down to complete the shutout over NMSU.

The Islanders will continue competing in the I-35 Tournament, heading to San Antonio for days two and three. They will rematch the Aggies tomorrow at noon before facing the hosts of UTSA later at 5 p.m. A&M-Corpus Christi will then face Abilene Christian for the third time this season on Sunday at 10 a.m.
