Islanders Play Concordia in Nonconference Finale

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Closing out the nonconference slate, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will welcome Concordia on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
 
The Islanders (6-4) will be looking to extend its winning streak to four before entering conference play next week. They are coming off a lopsided 77-33 victory over Our Lady of the Lake in front of a sold-out home crowd where they posted a season-best 48.2 shooting from the field.
 
Graduate Alecia Westbrook continued to make history in that game, first breaking the program record for career rebounds after securing her 995th within the first three minutes of the game to surpass Elisa Beagle's (2005-10) 994. She then grabbed her seventh and final rebound of the day in the third quarter, exiting the game with an even 1,000 career rebounds which made her the first player in program history to do so.
 
Westbrook's season rebounding also puts her atop the conference rankings for the third year in a row, currently averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. She leads the team with her scoring as well, scoring 10.1 points per outing.
 
She is one of eight Islanders averaging over 5.0 ppg, with senior Paige Allen (6.9), senior Mireia Aguado (6.8), junior Nabaweeyah McGill (6.4), junior Annukka Willstedt (6.1), junior Tymberlin Criswell (6.0), and senior Violeta Verano (5.2).
 
McGill leads the league in blocked shots, averaging 1.9 per game. She has recorded multiple blocks in a game six times this year. She also ranks third in the SLC for offensive rebounds per game (2.2). The Islanders lead the Southland Conference in blocks (4.60 bpg), assists (15.20 apg), steals (10.60 spg), rebounds (39.9 rpg), opponent field goal per[1]centage (.339), and assist/turnover ratio (0.99).
 
Concordia (2-9) has garnered a pair of wins this season, led offensively by Jordan Bravo who turns in an average of 12.4 ppg.
 
The game can be watched live with a subscription to ESPN+. Doug Kesterson will be on the call. It will be the final game before conference begins, opening Jan. 3 for the Islanders when they host UIW.
 
NOTES
- It will be just the second ever meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi and Concordia after the teams met for the first time in Corpus Christi on Dec. 13, 2020, when the Islanders won 84-38. Senior Paige Allen, who was a freshman at the time, posted her career-high 21 points against the Tornados.
 
- A&M-Corpus Christi has scored at least 50 points in every game this season. It is the first time since 2018-19 that the Islanders have scored at least 50 points in each of the first ten games of the season.
 
- The team is 5-0 this year when they outrebound their opponent and when they score more than 60 points. They have shot above 33.3 percent from three in the last three straight games.
 
- The Islanders average 65.3 points per game, with 31.2 coming from off the bench. The team's bench points per game average ranks them 12th in the nation.
 
 - The Islanders are 5-2 at home this season, 229-150 all-time at home, and 62-31 in the Dugan Wellness Center. They have won at least 10 home games in both of the last two seasons.
 
- Westbrook is the sixth active player in the NCAA to reach 1,000 career rebounds. Her total comes right behind Angel Reese's (LSU) 1,069. In addition, she has in total broken the program career records for free throws made, free throws attempted, defensive rebounds, double-doubles, and total rebounds. She continues to chase the program record for minutes play and total points.
