Islanders Welcome Our Lady of the Lake Tuesday for Education Day

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will host Our Lady of the Lake in an 11 a.m. Tuesday matchup in the Dugan Wellness Center in front of elementary schools from West Oso ISD and CCISD for Education Day, presented by Whataburger.

The Islanders (5-4) return home after picking up its first road win of the season with a 57-51 victory at UTRGV. Both teams scored more in the fourth quarter than they did in the entire first half, including a monster 27-points from A&M-Corpus Christi. It was carried by the explosive three-point attack as the Islanders went 5-for-7 from deep in the final 10 minutes, turning in their second straight game of shooting over 33.3 percent from beyond-the-arc.

Part of that attack was junior Jaeda Whitner who nailed a trio of threes in the game. It was her third time this year to make multiple threes in a game, but first to make three. She ranks second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.476).

Senior Violeta Verano and junior Nabaweeyah McGill are both riding two-game streaks of scoring in double figures. They are two of eight Islanders averaging at least 5.0 ppg, including team-leader graduate Alecia Westbrook who is averaging 9.8 points per outing.

Westbrook leads the team and the conference in rebounding with 7.9 per game. She is currently at 993 career rebounds, seven away from the 1,000 milestone, which ranks her sixth in the active career list among all NCAA players just behind Angel Reese of LSU (1,069).

McGill also ranks atop the conference standings, averaging 1.9 blocks per game. She has recorded at least two blocks in five games this season, helping the team average a league-best 4.78 blocks per game.

The team also leads the SLC in assists (14.67 apg), steals (10.89 spg), rebounds (39.8 rpg), and assist/turnover ratio (0.96). The Islanders will be going for their third win in a row, which would be the longest winning streak of the season.

OLLU (3-6) is led in scoring by Tiffany Lopez who contributes an average of 13.7 points each game while shooting over .500 FG%. Lopez also leads the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg) and blocking (1.1 bpg).

The Islanders are 4-2 at home this season, 228-150 all-time at home, and 61- 31 at the Dugan Wellness Center. They have won at least 10 home games in both of the last two seasons.

The game can be watched live with a subscription to ESPN+. Doug Kesterson will be on the call.
