Women's Basketball at UTRGV Thursday, Road Games to be Covered on Live Radio

EDINBURG, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will now have game coverage on live radio for all away games, beginning at UTRGV Thursday in the second meeting of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.

All remaining road games for the 2023-24 season will now be available to listen to live on 1440 AM NewsTalk K-E-Y-S with Doug Kesterson on the call. Thursday's game will be the opening night of the change, with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. CT.

The game will also complete the yearly two-game series between A&M-Corpus Christi (5-5) and UTRGV (0-8) after the two first met in each other's last games back on Dec. 5. The Islanders will be looking for the season sweep over UTRGV after winning the first meeting 69-46 at home this year.

It was the first time the Islanders held the Vaqueros to under 50 points since the 2018-19 season (59-49). They are coming off that win that was helped in part by its three-point shooting after the team shot over 33 percent from beyond-the-arc for the first time this year.

Graduate Alecia Westbrook registered her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds in the game. She leads the team in scoring with 10.0 points per outing, as well as leading the conference in rebounding for the third year in a row (7.9 rpg). Junior Nabaweeyah McGill comes in at third in the SLC for offensive rebounds (2.4 orpg).

McGill also sits atop the conference rankings, averaging a league-leading 1.9 blocks per game. She has recorded four blocks in a game two times this season, and at least two blocks in four games.

The Islanders lead the Southland Conference in blocked shots (4.50 bpg), assists (14.63 apg), and steals (10.63 spg).

UTRGV is still searching for its first win of the season, dropping six of its eight losses by less than 10 points. Iyana Dorsey leads the Vaqueros in scoring, averaging 16.9 points per outing, though, she was kept to just four points in the first game with the Islanders this year.

The South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, is an annual rivalry series in which Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV compete against each other in 12 sports, including twice in basketball. The Islanders lead the all-time series 5-2.
