Islanders Head to Texas A&M to Continue Opening Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Coming off a dominate season opening victory, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team will take to the road for the first time in 2023-24 for a stiff test at Texas A&M Thursday night at 6 p.m. in Reed Arena.

It will be the eighth all-time meeting between A&M-Corpus Christi (1-0) and Texas A&M (0-0). The Islanders will be going for their first win over the Aggies.

The Islanders are coming off a season opening 79-41 victory over St. Thomas at home. It was the program's first time winning its season opener since the 2019-20 season, which also came against the Celts. It was the third meeting in a row with St. Thomas that A&M-Corpus Christi led by at least 30 points at half time, leading it 42-12 at the break.

All 14 student-athletes saw at least nine minutes of play in the season opener, and everyone took at least one shot. Junior Nabaweeyah McGill led the team with 13 points, nearing a double-double with nine rebounds. Graduate Alecia Westbrook also grabbed nine rebounds.

Also in double figures were freshman Torie Sevier, junior Annukka Willstedt, and senior Mireia Aguado who all scored 10 points. It was Sevier's collegiate debut, setting the bar high for herself with her 10-point, seven-rebound performance.

Thursday will be Texas A&M's season opener. The Aggies are coming off a campaign that had them become the first 13-seed to advance to the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament, as the team returns over 70 percent of their offense. They signed the No. 20 freshman class with the No. 1 player in Texas, Kylie Marshall, leading that group.

Returners Bruna Anguera, Maya Ellis, and Paige Allen all scored six points against the Aggies in last year's meeting.

The game can be watched live on SECN+/ESPN+, or could be heard live for free on the Islanders Digital Network with Doug Kesterson on the call.

NOTES

- The Islanders will be going for their fourth win over a Power Five program in school history and first since 2009-10 when they beat Alabama 96-90. A&M-Corpus Christi also defeated Indiana and West Virginia in the 2004-05 season.

- A&M-Corpus Christi began its 25th season on basketball after the program started in 1999-00.

- The roster features a heavy veteran presence with five senior/graduates, the most since the 2019-20 season which marked Westbrook's freshman year.
